Castle Clinton National Monument This fort was originally built to protect New York Harbor during the War of 1812. Since then it has served as a processing center for immigrants, the location for the New York City Aquarium, and the temporary location of National Guard Troops during the September 11th terrorist attacks. Visitors to the Fort can now enjoy exhibits, a film and an in-depth bookstore on the history of New York.
